Former Tottenham man criticises Daniel Levy for being a ‘major problem’ at the club – says club is ‘not built for winning’

Jamie Redknapp, former Tottenham captain, has heavily criticised the club following the recent sacking of Antonio Conte, claiming that Spurs are “not built for winning.”

The Italian manager was let go after just 16 months following his outburst at the club hierarchy and his players.

In his column for Sky Sports, he criticised Daniel Levy for being a “major problem” at the club for his controlling nature which does not allow managers to thrive.

Redknapp also suggested that the culture at Spurs is not conducive to success, pointing to the club’s lengthy trophy drought. He argued that the culture is set from the top and that Levy’s controlling approach is a major obstacle to achieving success.

“This trophy drought isn’t just about the stadium,” Redknapp said.

“When I was at the club, I felt it wasn’t really built for winning. It was a completely different culture to what I’d been at with Liverpool.”

While he agreed that Conte’s public rant made his situation at Tottenham untenable, Redknapp stated that the manager’s remarks were directed more towards the club hierarchy than the players.

Redknapp’s scathing comments come after Tottenham’s decision to sack their fourth manager in just two years. The club has also parted ways with Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino, among others, in recent times.

It remains to be seen who will take over from Conte at Spurs with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique, Roberto De Zerbi and Julian Nagelsmann all linked – but Redknapp’s words serve as a warning to potential candidates that the club’s toxic culture could make the job challenging.
