Tottenham’s deal for €45m rated star close to collapsing after unexpected hindrance from within the club

According to The Evening Standard, Tottenham’s plans to sign a right wing-back are being hindered because both Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty are content with remaining at the club.

Spurs are interested in signing Pedro Porro from Sporting, who has a €45 million release clause, however, having three senior right wing-backs would create a problem for Antonio Conte in terms of managing the team’s roster.

As per the report, there are European clubs interested in signing Emerson, however, he has expressed that he wants to remain in the Premier League and specifically in London.

Royal had been Conte’s first-choice right wing-back, but he has not started a Premier League game for Tottenham since the World Cup, with Matt Doherty starting in matches against Brentford, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace.

The Brazilian has been in poor form this season and has come under huge criticism from the fans.

Matt Doherty has also not been able to win over Conte despite his performances during the mid-season friendlies.

At one point last season, he had cemented a place in Conte’s starting XI after a series of excellent performances but he suffered an injury that ended his season. He has not since then been able to replicate his form or get a proper run of games in the team.

Meanwhile, the report adds that Djed Spence is ‘attracting loan interest’ from Premier League clubs as well as German club Bayer Leverkusen. However, the player ‘remains focused’ on fighting for his spot at the North London club.
