West Ham United boss Rips Spurs, Premier League top six for their Champions League reform proposal

By Eddie Razo -

Over a year ago, Tottenham Hotspur and the other Premier League clubs attempted to be part of the European Super League to allow them to reap the financial benefits of international competition without earning it through play on the pitch.

However, that plan didn’t last long as all the top six bolted. Still, now West Ham United boss David Moyes is accusing these same teams of trying to pull a similar stunt that would allow them to qualify for the UEFA Champions League without finishing in the top four.

The proposals for the 2024-25 Champions League make it easier for the top six to even if they finished fifth or won the FA Cup. This submission isn’t sitting well with Moyes.

“I don’t think it sits correctly with anyone who is a football supporter,” Moyes said, per The Daily Mail. “I don’t see where there are many people who could speak positively about this being a good process.

“I’m guessing behind it is that this is some way to keep them from going into any other leagues. But it seems unfair. We want to try to mix it with the big boys when we get the chance.”

Moyes stated that the Big Six get security with this reform in the Champions League as it allows them to stop them from falling any further should they hit a rough patch and fail to be competitive.

“We are united in opposition to proposals to reform the Champions League that are a back door attempt at a return to the discredited idea of a European Super League,” Moyes said.

“These proposals will only widen the gap between rich clubs and the rest, at the same time wrecking domestic league calendars, with the expectation that fans sacrifice yet more time and money attending meaningless group games.”

It’s coming though. Greed wins in these matters. Spurs need to be in it. The clubs that don’t make the cut will stagnate or regress. Spurs are set up to compete in this league and when it comes along we will not look back if Spurs embrace the challenge.

I agree with much of your sentiment. I love what the FC United supporters did and also did a ten year stint watching my local non league side when I binned off Spurs because of ENIC. In reality the European Super league is unstoppable. It’s coming and Spurs need to be in it.

Went to Exeter to see themseal promotion to League 1 ..the ground was bouncing ..been taking 1500 away where capacity will allow, fan owned club…Not owned on the basis of borrowing against a massive stadium still not either attracting a NFL franchise or naming rights..is that because Daniel the highest paid Chmn in EPL football would never earn and milk as much money anywhere else….

Yawn ..a league for fraudsters bullshit#ters based on debt not ability..given the teams who have turned us over this season we don’t belong anywhere near a Super League. If you enter or amend the CL to allow the Top 6 into it..clubs should be banned from the EPL…Think we would be missed..your havin a laugh..

Moyes has this wrong. No Premier League club can claim the moral high ground regarding the formation of any European Super League. That ship sailed when the Premier League clubs broke away from the Football League thirty years ago.

Moyes was a Football League manager with Preston before Everton gave him the chance to wet his beak in the Premier League. The European Super League is a natural progression from the formation of the Premier League.

The Premier League has been a European Super League of sorts for about 20 years. Players from all over the world have come to play in the English top flight because of the financial rewards and the status the Premier League has. In many ways the domestic leagues in many other European countries have declined or become stale due to the popularity of the Premier League.

In England the domestic cups and the Football League have been the casualties of the Premier League pot of gold. The cup competitions are devalued and lower league clubs cannot retain their players once there is interest from the Premier League teams. Money is the solution to everything.

If Moyes has been happy to collude in all of this for twenty years it seems like hypocrisy from him to suddenly find a conscience on these matters.

I am in favour of the Super League. Clubs like Celtic and Ajax deserve to be given a chance to genuinely compete with similar sized clubs. The solution would be for Super League clubs to have two teams. One that competes in the Super League and one that competes in the domestic league. I would also welcome a return to domestic cup competitions becoming more prestigious.

If domestic European football reverted back to having a champions competition, a cup winners competition and an old style UEFA Cup competition this could be the route to promotion and relegation from the super league.

This Set Up is Phoney. It will suit a Phoney Football Club , like ENIC FC no doubt.

Yeah CL without spending any money on strengthening the squad, sounds right up his street. Personally I want to see us winning the Europa League and getting into it that way. Fat chance unless Levy changes his MO completely.
