Gary Neville makes interesting claim when asked if Tottenham are potential title challengers this season

By Mehdi Gokal -

Gary Neville has downplaid claims about Tottenham being title challengers this season despite their excellent start to the league.

They are one of the only two unbeaten sides in the Premier League, other being their arch-rivals Arsenal.

They beat a 9 men Liverpool last night in dramatic fashion with the winner coming in the 96th minute courtesy of a Joel Matip own goal.

The win takes them to 2nd in the table with 17 points in 7 games, a point behind City and ahead of Arsenal on goal difference.

After the game, Neville was asked whether they have the potential to go all the way this season.

However, the Sky Sports pundit claimed that their lack of squad depth will hold them back.

He said:

“I don’t think they’re title contenders.”

“When you see the bench coming on at the end, you know they’re not title contenders, I think they’ll be way off that.

“But what they are is spirited, more resilient than I imagined they would be and I say that more out of the North London Derby last week and what I saw.”

“They’re in a good place. There’s a spirit in the stadium, on the pitch and there is a connection with the way the manager is, the players on the pitch and the people in the crowd.”

“We’re not talking too much about the boardroom at Spurs as much as we would have been in the last few years.”

“But what they are is spirited, more resilient than I imagined they would be and I say that more out of the North London Derby last week and what I saw.”

“There’s no doubt there’s something happening here for Spurs. It isn’t always as good as it looks and I think there will be challenges down the line, but I think they’ll have a better season than I thought they would.”

TBH says:

Neville is right. We do not have enough squad depth to challenge the likes of Manchester City at the moment.

We are a couple of injuries away from struggling in the midfield and defense.

If we are close to the top come January and have a good January transfer window, bringing in several players to bolster our defense and midfield, perhaps conversations could then start.

But until then it is too early for any such claims. Let us take it game by game and enjoy the ride under Ange Postecoglou.
