“He’s a liability” – Tottenham star slammed for his mistake that led to Aston Villa’s second goal

By Mehdi Gokal -

Former Spurs manager and pundit Tim Sherwood has slammed Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero for another rash performance.

Despite an encouraging result last week against Crystal Palace, Spurs failed to build up on it as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in what was an important game for their pursuit to play in Europe next season.

First goal was a mistake on Pedro Porro’s part who did not do enough to track Jacob Ramsey’s run inside the box as he gave Villa the lead inside 10 minutes.

And in the 72nd minute, Douglas Luis doubled their lead with a stunning free-kick from 25 yards out. Forster got a hand to it but it was not enough to keep it out.

But it was Cristian Romero’s rash challenge on Watkins that gave Villa the opportunity to score from the set piece.

And Tim Sherwood was furious at the Argentine. He told Sky Sports:

“Douglas Luiz with the free kick, 30 yards out, but the free kick leading up to it, Ollie Watkins goes and gets a straight ball off the midfield player, and Romero just comes through him.

“There’s absolutely no reason why he should. He’s a liability, this guy.

“I think he has got a lot of qualities, but he keeps making these rash challenges all over the pitch, and he has done it again today. It looks like he has cost them.”

Harry Kane pulled one back from the spot in the 90th minute of the game after winning a penalty but there was no time for a come back this time as the game ended 2-1.
